Song Min Gyu has won the 13th Cantelli Award, aka the Guido Cantelli International Conducting Competition.

He was announced the winner on Oct. 6 at Coccia Theater in Novara, Italy, beating out competitors Giovanni Conti and Aram Khacheh from Italy and Luka Hauser from Germany.

Considered a gateway for young conductors ages 18-35, the contest this year saw a record-high 241 contestants. Eighteen reached the semifinals after three days of review, and four went on to the finals.

In August, Song was the runner-up at the second Hiroshima International Conductors Competition of Japan.
