Sharon Cho is a Korean Brazilian actor who appeared in the TV series "Alem do Guarda Roupa" (Beyond the Wardrobe). Seeing her in person at a fan meetup hosted by the Korean Cultural Center in Sao Paulo, I conducted an email interview with her on July 20 on her life and career.

The following are excerpts from the interview.

Briefly introduce yourself.
I was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil. My first language is Korean, which is what my parents spoke. I attended a Brazilian school in the morning and spent the rest of the day at a Korean school. My identity has been influenced by both cultures. I connect with the warmth of Brazilians while possessing the Korean qualities of introspection and meticulous expression. The Korean language has more words describing taste, smell and feelings than Portuguese.

What prompted you to pursue acting?
I've always been passionate about media work. I dreamed of being a director but grew more interested in telling a story by playing a character and putting myself in her shoes.

What role do you play in "Beyond the Wardrobe?"
I play Carol, a strong girl who works hard to achieve her dreams. She once hated everything about Korea but after her wardrobe turns into a magical portal to Seoul, she is forced to face her fears and insecurities.

How did you feel when you got the part?
I heard of an audition for a show that needed young people of Korean descent. This was a now-or-never opportunity for me. I was worried that I might not get the part but tried my best. When I heard that I got it, it felt like a dream. But I think the best things in life start with risk and a bit of madness.

How did this experience influence you as an actor?
Mine was a pretty big debut role, so I learned a lot. I fell in love with the production process of the show including the sets, acting and audiovisuals. I hope to be a versatile actor who can play any role.

The characters Dae-ho (left), played by Jin Kwon, a member of the K-pop boy band Newkidd, and Carol (Sharon Cho) appear in a scene from the Brazilian drama "Alem do Guarda Roupa" (Beyond the Wardrobe).

What are your plans?
My dream is to work in international productions. I'd also like to work in Korean films because I've admired Korean cinema since childhood. It won't be easy but I'll grab every opportunity I can get.

What do you think about Brazil's growing interest in Hallyu (Korean Wave)?
I think Hallyu is no longer a wave but an eternal rain -- it's becoming a constant influence. I'm so happy over Korean culture's positive reception and hope that "Beyond the Wardrobe" shows how compatible Korean and Brazilian cultures are and sparks interest in the people of both countries in each other.

What advice do you have for aspiring actors?
I think the most important thing is to not give up instead of ruling out acting as an impossible dream. It's never too late to take up an opportunity.
