"Baby shark, doo doo doo doo doo doo." This simple yet infectious tune is one of the world's most recognized children's songs.

As Baby Shark celebrates its 10th anniversary, I spoke with Kwon Bit-na, chief strategy officer of the character's creator Pinkfong Company based in Seoul about the journey of this global phenomenon.

The following are excerpts from an email interview conducted from Feb. 14 to March 4.

Baby Shark this year celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Describe Baby Shark's origin and global success.

The song, which debuted on YouTube in 2015, was born from data showing children's attraction to powerful predators. We reimagined sharks as friendly characters, incorporating K-pop-style rhythms and easy-to-follow dances. The breakthrough came in 2017 with the Baby Shark Challenge in Indonesia, which quickly spread globally.

How has this success transformed Pinkfong and what's next for the franchise?

From our 2010 launch as an educational content provider, Pinkfong has evolved into a global entertainment power reaching 244 countries and territories, with Baby Shark surpassing 100 billion YouTube views. The franchise now includes TV shows, movies, and collaborations with major studios like Nickelodeon and DreamWorks.

We've integrated educational elements from language to science. The content has shown impact in a range of things like helping hospitalized children cope with difficult circumstances. Our content provides both education and emotional support to children worldwide.

What events will mark the 10th anniversary?

We're celebrating with collaborations with Sesame Street and DreamWorks Animation's Grabby Dollhouse, plus events in major cities worldwide.

What message do you have for Baby Shark fans?

As Baby Shark maintains its position as YouTube's most-viewed content while celebrating its 10-year milestone, we are deeply touched by its impact. Knowing that billions of children worldwide have shared joy, laughter and dance with Baby Shark inspires us to continue creating experiences that resonate across ages and cultures.
